QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Everything you're wondering before you start — no question is too small.

What ages are the cards suitable for?

Conversations with Kids is split into three age-appropriate card decks - 1–4, 5–8, and 9–12 - so you're always using language and concepts that match your child's stage of development. Not sure which one to start with? Our age guide on each product page can help you choose.

How do I actually use the cards?

There's no set order and no script to follow. Pick a card whenever a natural moment comes up - bath time, car trips, bedtime - read the prompt together, and let your child lead the conversation. These are meant to be quick, low-pressure chats, not lessons.

My child seems too young for this. Is it too soon to start?

It's rarely too soon. Body safety conversations work best when they start early and happen often, using simple, matter-of-fact language - not one big serious talk. The 1–4 deck is designed specifically for this age, focusing on body awareness and naming body parts in an age-appropriate way.

What if my child asks a question I don't know how to answer?

It's okay not to have every answer ready. You can always say, "That's a great question, let's find out together," and come back to it. The cards are designed to open conversations, not to require you to be an expert - you're simply creating a safe space for your child to keep talking to you.

Will this scare my child or make them anxious about safety?

No - the cards are deliberately written to be non-fearful. The goal isn't to warn kids about danger, but to build everyday language and confidence around their bodies, boundaries, and trusted adults, so they feel empowered rather than afraid.

How is this different from just Googling "how to talk to kids about body safety"?

Conversations with Kids was created by Kristi McVee, Australia's leading child safety expert and educator. Kristi spent 10 years in the Western Australian Police as a specialist child interviewer, including nearly six years as a detective specialising in child sexual abuse investigations. Since retiring in 2020, she wrote Operation KidSafe: A Detective's Guide to Child Abuse Prevention (released 2022) and is now a key speaker on identifying grooming and predatory behaviours, body safety education, online child exploitation, and how to have tough conversations with kids about body safety and abuse prevention. Every prompt is grounded in real investigative experience - not generic advice.

Should I get the digital cards, physical cards, or both?

It depends on how you like to use them. The physical cards are great if you want something tactile to keep on hand - in the car, by the bed or bath, in a bag for grandma's house - with no screen involved. The digital cards are handy if you want instant access on your phone or tablet, want to print your own copies, or need the conversation cards for some help in a teachable moment. Many parents choose both: physical cards at home, digital as a backup or for on-the-go moments. If you're not sure, our complete bundle includes physical cards plus the digital guides and course, so you're covered either way.

Can educators or organisations use these cards too?

Yes - many early childhood educators, schools, and organisations use Conversations with Kids alongside their own child safety curriculum.
