I absolutely love Kristi McVee’s Conversations with Kids 1–4 cards and genuinely believe they are a resource every family and early childhood setting should have.
As both a mum and an Early Childhood Teacher, one of the things I value most about these cards is how easy they make it to have really important conversations with young children in a way that feels natural, age-appropriate and not scary. Rather than sitting children down for one big “body safety talk”, the cards create opportunities for these conversations to become part of everyday life.
They cover so much more than simply teaching children about body safety. They encourage conversations around feelings, consent, boundaries, trusted adults, speaking up, recognising when something doesn’t feel right and knowing that they can always come to a safe adult.
I particularly love that they give adults the language and prompts to start conversations that we sometimes know are important but aren't quite sure how to approach. At the same time, they give children space to think, respond and lead the conversation. You can learn so much just by listening to their answers.
For me, these cards aren't about frightening children or making them responsible for keeping themselves safe. They're about giving children knowledge, language and confidence, while reminding us as adults that keeping children safe is ultimately our responsibility.
They are simple, practical and incredibly valuable. I couldn't recommend them highly enough to parents, carers, educators and anyone who has young children in their lives.
