Body Safety Cards | Ages 9-12

The tween years are when kids need these conversations most, and when parents find it hardest to have.

Created by Kristi McVee, former WA Police detective and specialist child abuse investigator, these conversation cards are designed for the age group most targeted by groomers, most exposed to online risk, and least likely to speak up if something goes wrong.

As a detective, Kristi interviewed hundreds of children who had been abused. Most of them were in this age group. And most of them said the same thing: they didn't know how to tell anyone, or they didn't think anyone would believe them. These cards help change that, before it matters.

Because the most protective thing you can do isn't monitor their screen. It's make sure they'd tell you if something happened.

What's included:

  • A set of beautifully illustrated cards designed specifically for children aged 9-12
  • Language that respects their growing maturity while keeping the conversation grounded in safety
  • Guidance for parents on navigating the harder questions this age group will ask, including online safety and peer pressure

Why it works:

Kids aged 9–12 are online, independent, and often fiercely private. Traditional body safety conversations can feel babyish or irrelevant to them. These cards bridge that gap, opening conversations about boundaries, online risk, consent, and speaking up in a way that lands.

Watch Conversations with Kids founder, Kristi McVee show you what's inside the 1-4yo card deck, whilst she explains how to use the body safety cards.

Every age specific deck includes a parent guidebook explaining each body safety lesson and why it matters, plus heavy duty, plastic coated conversation cards designed to be used again and again. No experience needed, no wrong answers, just simple questions that open the door to keep our kids safer.

Use again and again

Return to the cards as your child grows and each conversation develops.

Most parents want to have this conversation. They just don't know how to start it without scaring their child, saying the wrong thing, or making it feel like a big deal. So they wait. And the conversation never happens. These cards change that!

Why physical cards, not an app?

Screens are everywhere yet when we have these important conversations, we want to be present and connecting with our child, not looking at a screen.

Hard conversations, like body safety don't belong on another device.

Physical cards:

  • Invite connection without distraction
  • Sit on the kitchen bench or coffee table
  • Encourage repeat conversations over time
  • Are easier for parents to remember and kids to engage with

These cards are a great help for any parent, especially busy ones. They give you a topic to talk about with your child (it might be a short conversation or a longer one, depending on the subject and of course the child’s interest in it or if it’s relative at all). We use them sometimes before bed, just a few cards to discuss something, and sometimes my daughter has something to say as an example, or sometimes she doesn’t. Even when cards repeat, the conversation is different, as your child grows and their experience and understanding of the topic is changing. I feel that these cards are must have basic knowledge for children to stay safe and be able to differ what’s ok and what’s not ok and to be confident to voice it if needed. Highly recommend them.
